Breast Cancer

What Is Breast Cancer?

Of all types of cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer. 1 in 8 women have a risk of developing breast cancer in their lifetime. Breast cancer is a condition where healthy breast cells grow out of control, become abnormal and start to form masses, and then spread to other parts of the body.

Symptoms

Diagnosis

If there is suspicion of cancer first thing done is a biopsy of the mass. The biopsy will prove or disprove the diagnosis of cancer. With help of an imaging test like a CT scan or PET scan staging is decided.

Treatment

  • Surgery
  • There are two surgical options you have. The first one is lumpectomy in which the surgeon will remove the cancerous cells and leave the rest of the breast as it is. The second one is mastectomy in which the breast is surgically removed.
  • Radiation therapy
  • It is recommended after the surgery to reduce chances of local recurrence.
  • Chemotherapy
  • Chemotherapy is given after surgery to reduce chances of recurrence. It is also given in Stage IV to control cancer.
  • Hormone therapy
  • Regardless of the size of your tumor, hormone therapy is recommended for hormone receptor-positive breast cancer.
